The Other Option

The big news story (locally) is the fact the Chico school district will be closing 2 schools next year because of budget shortfalls. Those in charge say that is the "only option". Of course it isn't! If they wanted the schools to stay open, they could have raised taxes to pay for it. And those who are against the school closures could pay those taxes. That is how it is supposed to work...If you want the schools, take charge. Tell your elected officials that you want to pay for it.

Better yet...take the schools back and give them to the local parents. One school=one district. Then you will see accountability. Until that happens, it's all politics as usual.

Oddly enough, no mention was made of a decrease in administrators wages. It seems that there should be, since there will be two less schools to administer to...

  1. Now wait a minute Cowboy! Cut administrators pay? Are you crazy!?

Honestly it is a matter of values, the majority in California value Indian Casinos and Sorts Areanas more than school. Then factor in the unions. I tried to donate paint to a parents group to do some work on the schools back in the mid 90's and the Unions had a fit over the parents doing Union work.

Back in Maine, a smaller state that is arguably pound for pound the poorest state, kids have their own laptops for school. I remember struggling to get "C's" in Maine only to come out here and find school was pretty darn easy and that teachers though I should be in "AP" courses. But then again I had Sen. George Mitchell at my school and even in a class periodicly. In Antioch I never once saw Representitive George Miller (my rep at the time) and he was the chair of an education committee. Not only that this good liberal Democrat didin't even have the time to answer my letters questioning why he doesn't visit schools in his district.

  2. Raise taxes during wartime?!? That sounds....logical....we don't care for that kind of talk around these parts.

  3. Dave...you say that the school in Antioch was an easy one. That is not true of all schools. I know of three schools that are not like that. I also know of many that are just like that school in Antioch. The difference? Parental involvement. And the larger the school district, the less involved are the parents. The quality of education should have nothing to do with liberal or conservative politics; it should be the responsibility of the parents!

The perfect size for a school district? One school! And hope that a state senator or assemblyman NEVER visits!

  4. Well Steve I guess it depends on the legislator. If the representatives had their feet held to the fire rather than being given a pass for the "R" or "D" next to their name things might be different.

I'd prefer vouchers so that I could affoard to send my child to the same caliber of school these hypocritical politicians send their kids too.
