Business Speaks

The news is filled with the promise of a showdown on the immigration bill now being debated in the Senate and on the internet. Bill or no bill, nothing much will change for the migrant workers. We have been inviting them here for the past century and promising to pay them very little while abusing them…and it has worked! They continue to come and always will. An immigration bill and more Border Patrol will only slow the process, not stop it.

The local NPR station, kjzz, interviewed an economics professor at the University of AZ and she was saying that the only thing that slows down the flow of illegal immigration is not the fences or the extra border patrol, but the economy. Right now the flow is slowing because our economy is slowing. Not as many construction jobs, etc. She was saying that migration is fixed to the economy and when they know there is a job here, they will come. If it is less sure, they may not take the high risks of crossing. Sanctions on businesses create instability and only hurts the economy. Interesting point of view.

She's absolutely right! (IMHO) Jobs are the only reason they come. It's not for some altruistic reasons such as a love for democracy; or a chance to freeload, etc...

Business loves the illegal migrant worker. It's good for the bottom line.

The book I was reading, The King of California, tells of the time when it was decided that blacks were not dependable to pick cotton anymore. There were too many other opportunities for them. The word went out to bring in the Mexicans and disaster in the California cotton industry was averted. This was genuine disposable labor!
