How children lost the right

to roam in just four generations

So sad

Roaming, by foot best describes my childhood. Mother did not drive, Dad gone all day, no bicycle for me and aside from some bus trips between Spec Saunders Roller Rink in Redondo Beach and shopping in Westchester, no vehicle transportation until I bought my first car at 18! I was thin, fit and have such sharp clear memories of the best make believe worlds outside in the empty lots of our neighborhood. Trick or treating in the neighborhood alone. Walking home from the La Mar show at 10 pm from age 12 or so. What a wonderful childhood I had. No playdates needed. I played with who I wanted. Is the world so different today?

  2. No, the world really isn't that much different, but the perception has changed.

Statistics say we're as safe as we once were. There are no 'alarming' jumps in crimes against children, but perceptions, fueled by 'talking heads' newscasts makes all the difference in the world.

If people would only question what they hear! Or read...

Yes, I agree. Last night, the "teaser" for the 10 pm News was rehashing an old scare to see if we could be scared again. I guess nothing scary happened yesterday to lead in with, so they looked at history for something scary to put out there and comment on. Keep everyone scared at all costs. Do they think no one wants news unless it is in the form of a warning about something common in our lives that could harm us? It probably started years ago with 60 minutes bits to alert us of wrong doing. Now every news agency wants to be the one to protect us at all costs from everything that could possibly do us in.
