I was reading, once again, about the problems of the schools. I decided to do some research as to how much we value teachers and came up with these figures from the US Government, Department of Labor & Whatever. These are the annual pay figures for the year 2009. Today's figures will be lower, of course. I included some pay figures from other occupations just for comparison.

"According to the Census Bureau, over an adult's working life, high school graduates earn an average of $1.2 million; associate's degree holders earn about $1.6 million; and bachelor's degree holders earn about $2.1 million." Unless, of course, you have a bachelor's degree in education.
I was hoping to find the wage figures for a high school coach. A football coach to be exact. But that figure was not to be found and I'm not surprised. By the way, did you ever notice that during heated discussions about school finance, cuts to the athletic department are never mentioned? Okay, if they are mentioned…they are dead last!
Wow! Wow! No wonder Florida is so low on the scale. Where did these numbers come from? I have been wondering what I am going to do with my degree once I get it and I cannot afford to work as a teacher. Not in middle school or high school as a Civics/government/ history instructor. Not here in Bay County. Starting pay in less than $30,000 a year. I would be happy with $63,440. That would be a huge raise!

ReplyDeleteI think the numbers are a nationwide average and represent the median wage of teachers with tenure...I know the beginning teachers around here don't see the high numbers, but those with experience do have salaries in the $60's
Nothing pays here like they do there (or most other places), but we live in paradise, right?
