Death and Taxes

I just read that the Butte County Library, through its Advisory Board, has lobbied the County Supervisors to place a 1/8th cent sales tax increase on the ballot to help fund the library. And according to what I read, Supervisor Kim Yamaguchi said, “I think that asking the public to accept a library tax at this time is unacceptable.” Because “it would stifle the economy.” What? 1/8th of a cent will cause the economy to deteriorate or stagnate? I can’t help but wonder if Mr. Yamaguchi has ever been in a library? Read a book from the Economics section? Luckily, someone reminded him that the request was only for the chance to let the public decide the question in an old fashioned way, to vote on it.

  1. Why do you assume that people that are different than you, that hold different values are some how uneducated and stupid? Not everyone feels comfortable passing a law that demands that others give up their money to someone or something else. You of all people should appreciate that not everyone is comfortable handing more money over to institutions and governemnts that already piss the money they get now away.

It's only 1/8 of a cent here, 1/4 of a cent there. It's called being nickled and dimed to death.

I would gladly fork over 1/8 of one cent for a library, however I don't feel comfortable forcing my neighbor to do the same.

  2. You need to read it again...Mr. Yamaguchi was against letting people decide by voting on the proposal...as I wrote.

  3. Ahhhhhhh, I misunderstood. I thought he was was against the idea of a tax increase (and was under the impression that an increase was being sought) but was reminded/corrected when he was informed that what was being sought was a vote on a tax increase.

I propose that they cut the pay of the county administrators, assemblymen, state senators, congressmen, and senators to pay for the library and countless social programs.

  4. Yes, Mr. Yamaguchi was jumping the gun. And I'm certain that he will vote NO. As is his right.

And I believe that the library should be high on the list of priorities when it comes to making budgets...A library can start a young person on a life long path of learning. A library can excite the imagination and fulfill that "need to know" about thousands of subjects. Mr. Yamaguchi needs to see what a lack of education will do to the local economy. 1/8 of a cent? A bargain at 4 times, 8 times the price!

  5. Yes we need to fund public libraries, free porn for everyone. I remember the good ol' days before the proggresives fought for the right of perverts to view porn next to your child or grandchild.

  6. I see...when in doubt, just use some tired old generality. Or rumor. Or anything that comes to mind. Which library, specifically...did you mean? Surely you didn't mean mine?

  7. Oh please, be intellectually honest to yourself atleast.

I know you read the papers and keep up with Supreme Court cases. I support libraries, I don't support the liberal mental defect that says porn in libraries is free expression or better said, a God given right.

We will never agree on this subject, I beleive in lots of liberty you do not, just check our political ideology test on our blogs. I have to admit, given my distrust in my fellow citiens sometimes I think government control would be better, then I look at my government. Call me a radical right winger but I don't want to end up like 54 million christians in Eastern Europe, exterminated by a socialist, totalitarian goverment (and Steve you are situated right in between the two). I think you have more faith in government so long as it is run by like minded people. I fear government run even by people like me.

You are a super guy though I must say, one of my favorites. And the best thing yet, we have a commonality in Christ that supercedes all this secular crap.

  8. Thank you Dave, I to, really enjoy our discussions, and of course we are both loved by a God that plays no favorites. He gave His gift to all of us. And I pray that God will bless you and your family this year and always...!

Now back to the library. You see, I haven't found any pornography in my library. Wrong aisle? No, but you can decide to "find" pornography anywhere you choose to look for it.

And I'm afraid I don't put much stock in political idealogy tests...it was fun, but certainly not an indicator of how I believe. I would have to see their credentials before I gave them much credence.

  9. I was given a test very similar to this in Poli Sci. It is pretty good, not perfect but good.

The porn in libraries is coming from access to the internet. Librarians can't stop people from viewing porn in public libraries, even when others are present. It went to the supreme court, the libraries lost.
