She was appointed to the job of Labor Commissioner for the State of California just a year ago and now she is leaving. Quitting. Apparently she did a great job, but the working conditions wore her down. According to her, “I can’t hire, fire, promote, demote or transfer. Those are key dimensions of what a manager does.”
Her life story is one of courage and determination, but the bureaucracy wore her down. A single mother at 18, supporting herself and her son by working as a reservation clerk at TWA. She was furloughed 6 times in 12 years and decided to become a lawyer for more security. A hit and run car accident in the 1970’s delayed her entrance to law school. With 7 spinal fractures and a broken neck, it was two years of surgery and therapy before she could begin her studies. After graduating, she worked at a San Francisco law firm and then ABM, a janitorial firm. She became an expert in employment law and human resources and that is what attracted the attention of our acting governor; he appointed her to the position of Labor Commissioner last November.
The whole story was in today’s Sacramento Bee and so it can’t be found on the Bee website today…look for it there tomorrow. It was in the Business section.
