Cats

I was hoping that I wouldn’t become a “cat person” when I brought home our new cat. It had been a long time since I had a cat and my plan was to have a mouse killing feline…that was all she had to do. All very simple, and I certainly hadn’t planned on becoming attached to her.

Short story…I’m attached. She has caught one mouse. A miserable record!

The day begins when I let her in about 8 AM. She immediately wants to play and her favorite game is “tag”. She loves to run the length of the house and then when I catch up to her, she turns, smacks my leg with one paw and heads back to the other end of the house. Sometimes she lies in wait for me to pass, then leaps out and smacks my leg again before running off. When I do catch her, she rolls over onto her back, inviting me to rub her belly. That’s a trap. As soon as I touch her, she has her claws and fangs all around my hand…but very gently. It probably wouldn’t be smart to pull away suddenly; but as long as I don’t resist, she quickly stops and begins to purr.

During the day, she enjoys sitting high on the roof of the shed, watching the world go by. When I want her, I simply clap my hands twice and she comes running.

At night, she only wants to lie on my lap and will sleep there for as long as I let her. At 10, she is put back out in the garage to hunt for mice…Hah!

I guess I need to keep the mouse traps.

  1. We just got a new kitten also, Cookie is her name. We got her from the second oldest dairy farm in the state (operating since 1776). When we arrived there were cats, kittens, dogs, geese, ducks, and chickens all running around (in some cases the kittens were hiding under the geese). I looked over the dozen or so kittens over varying ages. The people at the dairy farm were milking the cows (it was 9:00 at night) and pretty much ignored us. About half the kittens were feral. I found a little tiny one hiding in a room that was not real friendly butt also not feral. She was a calico of about six weeks of age. I scooped her up and immediately noticed she smelled like Cow dung. I showed her to my daughter who instantly fell in love with her. She's about ten weeks old and has finally stopped stinking. Our dog likes her and she keeps our 40Lb English Springer right in line. My older cat Corona (who is 15) hates the kitten, not as much as the dog but still.

If I had my way I'd have several ferrets. I finally live where I can own them legally and I don't have any. In California I had several on and off.

  2. Give her time to like her job.

Luv cats after many years of having no use for 'em.
