Here I am once more. Early on a Wednesday morning and I do believe it’s not raining right now. And that’s a good thing! And if you’re tired of reading about the rain here, think how tired I am of writing about it. As for the people who live in those perpetually wet parts of our country, like Portland or Seattle, they are simply…different.
It appears that the flu has passed. Meghan had it as well and she was feeling better yesterday. Luckily for us, the flu was of the 24 hour variety and I should be fine today. But, because of the flu, I missed out on seeing and hearing Meghan play last night at the Spring Concert at the Durham schools. Laurae told me that, once again, the students had improved amazingly.
What else is new? The big news yesterday was the retirement of Tom DeLay. After two of his top aides pleaded guilty to criminal charges I guess he figured out what was coming next. Like Nixon, he decided retirement was better than jail. And guess what? We all get to pay for his retirement! This includes lifetime full pay health care. A concept that Tom was always against…
I heard a comment or two on NPR about the DeLay case that made me wonder about our collective sanity as a nation; one commentator stated that although intellectuals might have a good idea once in awhile, it was only those who were willing to play rough, to get down and dirty, who would be able to get things accomplished. That the political world didn’t need empty headed intellectuals…it needed politicians who were willing to use the “back rooms” of power. Sad, but too often true. What’s a bigger crime is that we allow it. We vote for these people, time after time. DeLay had been elected 11 times! That makes his supporters, the voters in his district, co-conspirators in his crimes. But only if he were convicted and now that won’t happen.
And this bit of news…
“Baseball's average salary jumped nearly 9 percent to $2.87 million on opening day, and the three highest-paid players were New York Yankees.”
You probably won’t find any intellectuals in that group either.
And just for fun…the Simplified Spelling Society has great page of poems, especially helpful for those learning English.
