Bowling

The scores were 140, 145 and 158. Not bad for an old guy. Last night we went to the Orland Bowl. A magnificent sporting emporium, boasting a total of 10 lanes! The bowling was free last night for our local church; a new program by the owners to create some interest in the bowling alley and it worked, there were about a dozen of us there.

I went up into the attic yesterday afternoon and got my ball and shoes down; the shoes curled into a u-shape by being compressed around the ball for many years. And the style of those shoes was definitely from a bygone era. Polyester slacks would have looked very good with them. And I found an old score sheet in the bag, a score sheet from the old 4 lane Westwood Bowl; a place now gone and mostly forgotten. There was no date on the score sheet, but I’m estimating twenty years ago. My score that night? 134, 90 and 134 again. (By the way; there are no score sheets anymore and no pencils. It’s all done with a computer and that’s the part I really liked, the technology!)

Now it had been more than thirty years since I last bowled competitively, so I wasn’t expecting much. And was pleasantly surprised to do as well as I did. But, the ball and the bag, and yes, the shoes…are headed back up into the attic.
