Good Story

The morning exercise routine is over...whew! Of course I had a lot of thoughts running through my mind as I walked and here are some of them; why do we worship sports figures and movie stars? And why is it OK for an otherwise ordinary person to be remarkably focused on those things but it’s ‘weird’ if you show an interest in world affairs or technology. If I can give you the ERA of a leading pitcher and the sacking statistics for a professional pass rusher, then I’m an OK guy! If I can tell you who played each role in a current or not so current movie, I’m alright! But if I should show any interest in things technical; the internet, programming or world affairs; I’m a geek or a nerd. And that’s always used in a derogatory manner.

And then I listened to Steve Wozniak this morning. He was being interviewed on NPR as part of a push to sell his new book. I’m not sure how old the interview was; I couldn’t find a link anywhere for it? Maybe the book isn’t all that new? Anyway…great interview! Wozniak is obviously an INFP personality type. And since he was so enthused about the subject; he never let the interviewer get in a word once he was started. Some highlights I remember; he was going to turn down the chance to start Apple as he didn’t want to join the cutthroat corporate world. He didn’t want to ever have to fire someone. He was working for HP at the time and he told the story about when times were tough, HP didn’t do layoffs…everyone just took a cut in pay and no one lost their jobs. Mr. Wozniak is still convinced that that is the right thing to do today. And he’s right. Anyway, he is a fascinating guy and it’s a shame he dropped out of Apple so soon. Sure, he made a fortune and he is quite a philanthropist, but he would have made a better CEO than the current one.
