Yupo and Me

I just went out to the garage to see how my watercolors are doing. Yesterday, I did a couple of samples on Yupo paper. After flooding the paper with water, I added pigment and then covered it all with plastic film. Then I manipulated the colors with my fingers, pulling and stretching the film here and there. After allowing it to dry all night, I have pulled the film off to see the results. This will become the background for the rest of the work. I just have to find the art within it.

One of the great things about Yupo paper is the fact that it’s waterproof. If I’m not happy with the results, I will put it on the driveway and wash it off. And another is the fact that the colors stay sharp and bright, not being absorbed into the fibers of paper.

Yupo is not for everyone. You have to expect the unexpected when using it. And be willing to lose control of your project…just a little bit.

  1. Those are really good! The paper makes very interesting designs. I like it!

  2. Thanks...it's a good start. I will be using a spray bottle of water, additional pigment, rock salt and even a brush (Gasp!) to complete the painting. Or I will turn the hose on it! Another nice thing about Yupo is the cost...fairly cheap. Certainly cheaper than 175# cold pressed watercolor paper.
