Small Towns

Plenty of fire news this morning as lightning strike fires have caused US 395 to be closed in Independence. Now there’s a town (village?) embedded in my memory. It was one of three towns we had to pass through on our way north before we got to Bishop. And Bishop was a milestone of sorts; from there we knew we were getting close to the mountains and fishing at Twin Lakes (Bridgeport), at last! The other two? Lone Pine and Big Pine. Oops! I almost forgot lovely Olancha. Make that four towns.

“A DENSE SMOKE ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM PDT THIS

MORNING.

THE SMOKE PLUME FROM THE ANTELOPE COMPLEX WILDFIRE EXTENDS FROM

THE ANTELOPE LAKE AREA NORTH AND EASTWARD ACROSS HIGHWAY 395 FROM HONEY LAKE TO HALLELUJAH JUNCTION. THIS AREA INCLUDES

JANESVILLE... AND DOYLE. THERE WILL BE AREAS WITH VISIBILITIES OF

ONLY ONE QUARTER MILE WITH VERY POOR AIR QUALITY.”

The really big fire is still the Antelope Complex at over 14,700 acres now. Sad. I used to know every single road, path and trail in this area; exploring them every weekend as I searched for firewood to feed our hungry wood stove.
