What a waste of time. I turned the radio on in the garage and I listened to the legislators and General Petraeus. I’ve never heard so much political posturing in my life. (OK, maybe that’s a stretch.) It was enough to gag me, but I listened anyway. I did take a break every now and then, just long enough to run to the bathroom and vomit. And the idiocy was not restricted to the right wingnuts, everyone got their chance to play the fool. The end result? All those who spoke now have an enlarged portfolio of sound bites for campaign chicken dinners, bar mitzvahs and fish fry’s with the folks back home, come election time.
"The situation in Iraq remains complex, difficult, and sometimes downright frustrating. I also believe that it is possible to achieve our objectives in Iraq over time, although doing so will be neither quick nor easy." GEN. DAVID H. PETRAEUS, the senior American commander in Iraq.
I hate to do it, but I must agree with Colin Powell. He said that if we broke it, (Iraq) we would own it. And own it we do. I think it would be unconscionable to not safeguard the civilian population from the extremists that want to vent their rage by murdering the innocents. We need to be the referees now and not one of the combatants. And we need to fix everything we broke. This may take twenty years or more. That shouldn’t be too hard for us; we’ve spent over 50 years in Korea and we’re still there without any chance of a change. And of course we have to keep troops in all of the places we have interests; Europe, Japan, Philippines, Panama… and how about Grenada? I imagine we still have troops there. (Nope. Our job there is done.)
(I wonder if anyone has ever made a Google Maps mashup showing all of the places in the world where American troops are stationed and the numbers?)
And last; will any of the law makers that spoke yesterday have the courage to go after those that put our troops in such danger? Try and convict them?
