Granddaughter Shannon had posted some comments about the desirability of living somewhere with ‘wide open spaces’ and I had to agree. Genetic? I know that I have always loved the open country. I remember noting the big differences between the eastern slope of the Sierra’s and the western side of the same mountains. Give me the eastern (and wide open) side any time! As a child, I remember driving up US 395, near Big Pine, and seeing the White Mountains far off to the east, across an immense playa, and I wanted to walk to them. That vast landscape fascinated me.
And I get that same feeling when I’m in New Mexico. There’s a spot in the road as you approach Taos from the south, where you can see forever…or so it seems. And I have always loved the desert light. The sun seems to strike at an angle that produces a light that artists love. You could transport me, blindfolded, to New Mexico and as soon as you removed the blindfold, I would know where I was.
