Weather is big in the local news. A special weather statement has been posted and now it looks like I can suggest to the neighbors that we cancel the regularly scheduled irrigation for Wednesday. I will have to check with everyone downstream, but I have a feeling that I won’t be putting my boots on early tomorrow morning. Great! But, I will have to hurry and get the walnuts off the ground before the rains begin.
And as I was browsing the Weather Underground page, I couldn’t help but notice that Truckee is still holding the low temperature record for the state. Day after day. Without fail. This bit of news is now only of limited importance to granddaughter Shannon who had once thought of living there.
I’m still on a quest to find a new and dignified word to identify those who are over the age of? What shall we say? 65? 60? Senior citizen doesn’t do it for me. Golden Age’r makes me gag. And I just read an article that really irritated me; older people were described as being in their ‘twilight years’. Doesn’t that imply a lack of ‘brightness’?
There’s a good article by Sy Hersh in the New Yorker; all about Iran and the possibility of this administration executing a preemptive strike against them. “During a secure videoconference that took place early this summer, the President told Ryan Crocker, the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, that he was thinking of hitting Iranian targets across the border and that the British “were on board.”” Well, now it looks like the Brits just jumped off that particular ship. They intend to cut their troop strength in Iraq by half. And from the same article… “The Brits don’t trust the Iranians,” the retired general said, “but they also don’t trust Bush and Cheney.” The Cheney/Bush presidency will have to re-think their position. I know, I know… I implied ‘thinking’. And for these two, that might be a problem. Now that’s the scary part!
