Why so depressed?

Creak and groan. A typical Sunday morning response after a Saturday morning ‘long walk’. 6.2 miles in 1:24. That was a 13.55 minute/mile average and darn good for the shape I’m in!

On the painful day after a good exercise like that, I spend a lot of time and mental energy thinking about the fact that I will have to do this for the rest of my life. OK, how fit do I want to be? And how much time do I want to devote to that endeavor? The short term goal is one more marathon in October of 2008. And then?

There won’t be any walking today; we’re driving to San Francisco for the birthday and Christening celebration for our great-grandson, Colum.

I finished the book, Commander in Chief, by Geoffrey Perret and I’m glad I did. It was fast becoming a very depressing read. And it was the poet Sir Walter Scott that noted “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!” Deceit seems to be the one thing that is common among the recent presidents. The tangled webs were everywhere!

And I just read this, "It is a very serious threat that a lot of major exporters that we count on today for international oil supply are no longer going to be net exporters any more in 5 to 10 years." AMY MYERS JAFFE, an oil analyst at Rice University.

So, what would happen if these countries, the major exporters, suddenly got smart and decided to start holding back some of their supply? Make it last a little bit longer and cause the price to rise? If you were in charge, wouldn’t you do that?

Must lighten up!
