Gephyrophobia

Bridges Are a Terror -

OK. This would be me... or was me. Some bridges were 'safe' and others un-crossable. (Is that a word?)

I'm always going to blame my kindergarten teacher for it. Dover Elementary School was near the Los Angeles River and at one point the whole class was taken for a walk across a footbridge that spanned the river. A wooden footbridge where there was a gap between the boards that allowed you see all of the way down to the river below...a dry riverbed to be sure, after all it was Los Angeles, but still a long way down to the eyes of a 5 year old.

  1. I did not think I had that trouble until I went over the Carquinez Bridge in the Bay Area. Built in 1928, you could look down through the grating to the ocean below as you drove west. A newer bridge was built going East in 1958. I think those have been replaced by a new bridge built recently. After that bridge, the Coronado Bridge in San Diego gives my heart a start. I always have to watch the line in the road instead of over the edge and into the harbor.

  2. The old Carquinez Bridge? Oh, definitely! But...the good news; when we went to celebrate Colum's birthday, I decided to try them all. The west bound Carquinez Bridge is now a miniature 'Bay Bridge' (Very pretty) and the east bound, though older, is not bad at all! The Bay Bridge was a piece of cake. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that it was taking forever and we were late. I actually enjoyed the view. Much better than my previous trips to the bay, when I had to go to Tracy, Livermore, San Jose, and then up the 101. Whew!
