Obsolete, again

I was listening to NPR the other day and heard a story from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Ah! My ‘geeky’ mind was enthralled with the news of the new and exciting things that are in store for us. Wouldn’t I love to be there and to see all that the manufacturers have created for our pleasure? Reality check. I would have to fly to Las Vegas. Scratch that. I would be in a huge crowd of people. Scratch that. OK. I’m back to listening to NPR. It’s easier on my psyche. And my wallet.

And then I read Time Goes By this morning and noted that Ronni had a suspicion that the new digital television mandate might have been influenced a little bit by the television manufacturers. You think? Mandate or not, our television is simply wearing out at just the right time. 20 years. So I don’t feel too bad about having to move into the digital age.

But what does bother me… is the fact that whatever I buy, brand new, it will be obsolete before the set is unwrapped.

The NPR reporter (And Ronni) also mentioned that the HD/Blu-Ray wars are almost over with Blu-Ray getting 70% of the market. The same reporter also mentioned that consumers are getting tired of these format wars. And he said that consumers are tired of needing a degree in electronics just to program their remotes. Does he think the manufacturers care about any of that?
