Same Old

It could be. Maybe? I was reading Time Goes By this morning and apropos of nothing at all; the thought suddenly came to me that I don’t like television because…it’s one way. I can’t talk back! I can’t respond to what I hear or see. Although it’s somewhat limited in scope, I can respond on the internet. I can comment or I can post an idea or thought of my own. Is it heard? Oh, I don’t know, sometimes and sometimes not…but it makes me feel better. It’s certainly better than being face to face with a ‘dumb’ screen. Can you imagine how great it would be to be able to question that ‘talking head’ about some headline story? “Can you cite your evidence, please?”

Back to Time Goes By; Ronni Bennett was writing about ageism and how pervasive it is. Along with racism and sexism. And she mentioned the jokes that were being made at McCain’s expense because; after all, he’s old. Wrong. But, on the other hand I think McCain invites those jokes. He appears to be a caricature of ‘old’. No, not in appearance, but in his public proclamations. He doesn’t speak of the changes that are needed in our government; he speaks of staying the course. Of doing the same old things that got us into this mess. He speaks of Reagan. We don’t need anything from Reagan’s time. We need new ideas. Old ideas are comfortable and that’s alluring, especially to elders, but we need to ignore what’s comfortable. It’s time for change. (Does that sound familiar?)
