I ran across this website and it made me think. (Oh. Oh! Danger!) In an “In God We Trust” city, does that mean everyone in the city trusts in God? Who are the ‘We’ they speak of? The mayor, the council members, the fireman, the policeman and the garbage guy? Will you lose your job if you are found to be ‘Not Trusting’? Who, exactly, trusts? We probably need some names. It can’t be the city itself, as it has no soul, although it does have a name and an assortment of papers describing it’s location upon the face of the earth.
And the website speaks of promoting ‘Patriotism’ with this motto. So, you wouldn’t be a patriot unless you trusted God? Hmmm? That’s a tricky one. The next thing to be decided will be which God to trust; the Protestant one, the Mormon one, the Jewish one, the Catholic one, or? This whole thing gets more confusing all of the time. That is one of the pitfalls with adopting symbols and slogans and making them ‘magic’!
Now I have taken this a little further in my mind. If We Trust In God, do we need to pray? Sounds like the ultimate in not trusting when we beg God for help. Unless, of course, we add, “Thy Will Be Done”. But, that’s usually not what we wanted when we began to pray. But, it would look nice at the bottom of the slogan. “In God We Trust – But – Thy Will Be Done” I like it!
Okay, that’s an old theological argument; been talked about for hundreds of years and no one ever wins. The only thing I know for sure is the fact that God loves me and He doesn’t care where I live. He doesn’t love cities, towns, states or nations. He loves his people; humankind. And He does that without reservation.
