From Time Goes By

The Poorest Elders

Right on target. We had a special meeting of the Glenn County Seniors Centers board last week. Terry, the director of the Senior Nutrition site that uses our building, wanted us to know that some services may have to be cut. Her vendors have told her that food prices will rise anywhere from 10 to 80 percent. The Nutrition site provides a hot lunch on site as well as being delivered to those who can’t get out, and so it’s an important part of everyday life for about 200 elders in Glenn County; one of the poorest counties in the state.

Butte County, to the east of us, has already stopped their daily delivery of hot meals to elders. They are now delivering frozen meals just once a week. That saves money. But it also removes the once a day person to person contact that is so important to elders that can’t leave their homes.

Food. You can’t live without it.

  1. Sutter County is also running into problems with the "Meals on Wheels" program. The provider wants out due to rising costs as well. According to the Appeal Democrat back on July 29th, seniors here will have meals until Sept. 5th. I haven't seen much mention of the program since then.
