Just a thought

I got a chance to use my digital voice recorder a little more often this week. Meaning that I actually carried it with me and turned it on whenever I had a brilliant thought. True, it didn’t get used very often; brilliant thoughts are rare, but it does help me to remember a few things.

Such as the fact that the harvest season is in high gear. Harvest machines of all kinds are clogging the highways as they go from orchard to orchard. The county road that we live on is considered a main thoroughfare and so we see a lot of tractors pulling odd pieces of equipment past our house.

Prunes (And plums) aren’t picked, but are shaken from the tree, and so they have a special machine that wraps itself around the tree and provides a soft landing for the fruit while it shakes the tree at the same time. And although I looked everywhere, I couldn’t find a photo of a prune harvester. I found photos of just about every other kind of harvester, but prunes are not a favored fruit.

The almond harvest has just started. And just in time as lots of trees are losing some of their branches because of the weight of the nuts. Here are some photos of the harvest. Dirty! A cloud of dust hangs over the entire county during this time of year.

And one of these days I will get a chance to see the new olive harvesting machines in action. Special orchards had to be planted and grown just for the machinery and they are only about two years old. Probably not mature enough for a harvest. My own olive trees are now three years old and this year’s crop is the first one. With just two trees, I don’t think I will need a machine to help me with the harvest.
