Governor

Governor endorses Minutemen

This guy becomes weirder every day...What will the press do if he ends up running against Reiner? They will both have the same nickname; "Meathead".

  1. About Time the govenor comes out against Illegal immigration. I only wish the government would fulfill it's constitutional mandate to protect the country by securing out borders. You can call me a nut but I'd do what those minute men are doing. We need to nail the businesses that are hiring these illegals. I can't blame South Americans from wanting to come to America but we have to have a proccess and allowing business to break the law can't be part of the proccess.
Bush has dropped the ball here in order to pander to his Texas supporters.

  2. The Minute Men are a joke and a tragedy waiting to happen...Why do the people come? For the jobs. End of story. If there were no jobs, they would not come. Why is that so difficult to understand? What is the government doing about the hiring of illegals? Nothing. Why? Because our economy depends on them. Who are the victims? The immigrants.

  3. Calling them a joke dosen't make them so, no more than them calling you a head in the sand liberal would make it so (which is what I'm betting they would call you based on all the talk radio buzz) Your beef should be with the President for not doing enough to secure the borders. Bush is doing nothing but allowing his Texas friends to use Mexican slave labor, very Christ for such a man of faith.

A lot of these people are honestly concerned Steve. It might be easy to call them names but it doesn't solve the problem. I was reading online how the Minute Man Project is going to change it's operation to shine the light on employers. There are a lot of conservatives and liberals alike concerned about this issue. You probably aren't aware that some of the Minute Men have given food and water to the illegals out of concern for their saftey.

The Minute Men are doing what the Government should be doing. Not to mention that we the people are the government. The Original Minute Men weren't government employees, they were patriots. Anyone liberal or conservative looking out for the best interest of this country is a Patriot in my book.

While you call them a joke and Bush calls them Vigilantes our borders remain very unsecure and millions of South Americans are being exploited.

  4. The retarded democrats want to not only let the illegals in to work, but they want to give them a driver liscense as well.

Why call them illegal anymore at that point, I mean we're calling them illegal because they are, and the far left goofs want to give them every right we have.

I love people, and illegals are good people too, But lets stick to our governing laws, and not give any citizen rights to non citizens, its not fair to the legal folks.

  5. And calling themselves "Minute Men" doesn't make it true either. And yes, it's still a joke. The border is porous because of it's size. The "MM" group is patrolling less than than 1% of our borders. The flow of immigrants continues unabated. Just as water flows around a rock placed in the stream, the immigrants move to where they can cross. The fact is, without a huge (Billions!) expenditure of cash and huge commitment of personnel, the border will remain porous. And 3 months from now, when the temperatures in Arizona climb to way over a 110 degrees...will we see any Minute Men? Let's revisit this subject in August.

  6. Someone wrote, "The retarded democrats want to not only let the illegals in to work, but they want to give them a driver liscense as well."

First, the democrats don't want to let the illegals in to work. It's those who own businesses that depend on migrant labor that want them here.

That same person also said, "But lets stick to our governing laws" Good idea! It does happen to be against the law to hire an illegal alien. Do you happen to know how many people are prosecuted for this offense? 0, none and zip are the correct answers.

And concerning drivers licenses for immigrant workers...why do you think an effort was made to give them licenses? Was it because we are just neighborly and wanted everyone to enjoy the highways and byways of America?

No, it was about the insurance. No drivers license...no insurance. So now it is guaranteed that those workers don't have insurance. The lack of a license won't stop them from driving. And we don't have enough police to adequately patrol the roads as it is; would we ever be able to check that all drivers have licenses?

  7. "First, the democrats don't want to let the illegals in to work"

Correct, the dems want them here to vote and to vote for dems. They may eventually be in for a big suprise. Most of the ethnic migrants I have ever worked around or tutored where to the right of Rush Limbaugh. They might have been okay with a command economy but they were all staunchly anti-homosexual, pro-life.

I hope the "retarted" comment wasn't directed at you Steve. This guy will probably find out real quick that it is he that lacks that intellectaul ability to have a reasoned discussion with you. You are the least "retarded" person I've met in a long time.

The drivers license issue is a joke, both parties are using it as a way to make headlines and look good infront of their constituents. I am in favor of a national ID program. That would make the national security element of the opposition to it away from the debate.

I would think an anti-establishment guy like you Steve would appluad a group of citizens exercising their constitutional rights and shinning a light on the failed policies of Repbublican and Democrat administrations alike.

  8. I agree. The drivers’ license issue is a smokescreen. Some people see it as a way of depriving the immigrant of transportation; which it doesn’t do. The facts are; the majority of immigrants are hard working and certainly don’t want to call attention to themselves by breaking more laws. A driver’s license isn’t the perfect tool, but it would increase the number of insured immigrants. Without it, it’s certain that they will drive without insurance. We already have a surplus of “All American” drivers without insurance…but that’s another subject altogether.

Some see the driver license issue as part of the war against terrorism. Since a physical document, such as a driver’s license, is so easy to alter and the availability of the document varies from state to state, it’s not much of a tool to use against the dedicated terrorist.

Whenever I think of the efficiency of Homeland Security group, which isn’t often…I think about a day in 2002 when I met with a trainee in our Sacramento office. He had flown in from Phoenix that morning and he was telling me about his being late arriving at the Phoenix airport and how he had to run to catch the plane. He had overslept and then, to complicate matters, had left his driver’s license sitting on the kitchen table. Surprised, I asked him how he had made it through security. He showed me his Costco card.

Despite a lot of misgivings, I would support a national/federal ID. If the feds were ever able to coordinate all of the data that they already have, a national ID would be a step forward in security. Although hope springs eternal, people in various departments of the federal government often don’t speak to each other and their computer systems never do! So, it’s just a grand idea at best.

Regarding the Minute Men; you’re right, ordinarily I would applaud citizens who defy the system in their efforts to right the wrongs…but I believe they were wrong and I believe they were grandstanding. The problem isn’t the border. As someone once said to a president, “It’s the economy, stupid!”

Although all of the usual suspects, Bechtel, BRM, Halliburton et al, would love to have a contract to fortify our borders, the net result would be a failed economy, a grand waste of steel and concrete and the migrants would still find a way past it.

Based on some input from a law enforcement professional…I calculated the cost of securing the border between the towns of Flaxton and Sherwood, North Dakota, a distance of approximately 35.7 miles. It came to $1.2 million, not including overtime, for one year worth of protection. Admittedly, my calculations were not scientific but since I arrived in the million dollar range, I would bet that I’m close to a government sponsored estimate.
