Thought For Food

The other day we found ourselves in Sacramento. It wasn’t really a surprise; we had planned to be there. And since it was Easter vacation time for us, that meant we could do a little shopping.

As the lunch hour approached, we made our way over to Roseville and to the Roseville Gourmet restaurant; our favorite dining establishment. Despite the somewhat misleading name, this is a Chinese restaurant…but gourmet it truly is!

(I have all of the credentials necessary to be a critic of Chinese food; as I was once a dishwasher at the Tai Song restaurant in Manhattan Beach, an upscale Cantonese cuisine establishment. True, this was 48 years ago, but credentials never go bad. Unlike Egg Foo Yung, which can go bad, trust me!)

The food that day was just as good as ever. Served promptly and hot. In fact, I have never had a bad meal at Roseville Gourmet…and I have never found a restaurant to compare with it. The atmosphere (OK, call it ambiance) is just right. There are no loud voices and all who enter to dine are soon speaking in hushed tones, all very polite. The food is fresh and there is no hint of MSG at all. We had a luncheon special that included the Gourmet Chow Mien, Lemon chicken and Pork fried rice…delicious! And always reasonable. Last comment: The check is also delivered on time! One of my pet peeves with restaurants is that you sometimes spend as much time waiting for the check as you do waiting for the food.

Interesting note about this restaurant; from newspaper stories report that the wait staff has been with the restaurant ever since it opened and that was over 20+ years ago. How do you explain that, except for the fact that it must be an exceptional place to work.
