I know, I know

I know I have spent more time than I should have on the “blame game” for the tragedy in the South. But…it needs to be addressed. It is an affront to our sense of common decency and fairness. And pride should be mentioned as well. Although our national pride often gets in the way of fairness, this time they are linked.

And now that the politicians have begun their own version of the “blame game” it’s time for the news media to quite carefully and very correctly point out the errors and omissions in the stories that will almost certainly be fabricated by those in power. Hopefully, the news media will have regained some of their courage and won’t be cowed by those same powers.

“…the White House rolled out a plan this weekend to contain the political damage from the administration's response to Hurricane Katrina.

It orchestrated visits by cabinet members to the region; leading up to an extraordinary return visit by Mr. Bush planned for Monday, directed administration officials not to respond to attacks from Democrats on the relief efforts, and sought to move the blame for the slow response to Louisiana state officials, according to Republicans familiar with the White House plan.

The effort is being directed by Mr. Bush's chief political adviser, Karl Rove, and his communications director, Dan Bartlett.”
