School Days

School was the subject of our conversation the other day…and, surprise! I had an opinion on the subject. I won’t share the opinion with you, but I will share the memories I have of school. During the 1st Grade through 8th Grade, I attended school in the Manhattan Beach public school system. This was from 1946 to 1954. (And this was long before Manhattan Beach became a hot spot for the rich and famous.) Class sizes were usually 25 students. We had Art classes and we had Music classes. We had Field Trips. There was one teacher for all of this. No aides, no volunteer parents. One teacher per class. There was also a Principal, Mrs. Harriet Easley. Mrs. Easley always smiled at us and she was loved by all. Mrs. Easley had a paddle in her office, standing in the corner next to her desk. I never saw it used and I was never threatened with it. It simply existed in our consciousness.

Question: How did one teacher do all of that?
