The Fourth has arrived once again. An odd holiday and one that was arbitrarily set on what was, historically, the wrong day. The second of August was the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And not every one of the “founding fathers” signed it. As usual, we keep the history we like and discard the inconvenient history. But hey! It’s a great day for fireworks and picnics and that’s good for the economy, right?
In the news…of course I found an interesting column, one written to express a differing view of this holiday and one that I have always held as well. But, in these days of supercharged patriotism, it’s sometimes wiser to just keep your thoughts to yourself, here in the Land of the Free…
What else is new? I found this a few seconds ago… “Sometimes it seems like anyone who can run for president in 2008 is considering it. And why not? For the first time since 1928, there is no president running for re-election or vice president seeking his party’s nomination.” So that is good news and it’s also the usual bad news. The bad news is that we will have to suffer through a political season that will seem like an eternity! Money will flow like water and so will the lies and half truths. Civil discourse will be rare. All of the candidates will present their “vision” but will shun any mention of their intellect, appealing only to the bottom half of that bell curve.
And finally, the good news. We get a new president.
Last; the cat is back. She decided to celebrate her own version of freedom last night and stayed out, but she was waiting by the back door this morning and was quick to come in and get her daily ration of attention. Now she is sitting in the window and paying attention to the sounds of the birds as they begin to stir.
