I have the gate open and the water is running out into a thirsty orchard. Slowly. I’m not sure what causes the level in the canal to drop or rise from week to week. This morning it was about a foot lower than normal and so the irrigation process will take about 30 minutes longer. And the neighbors on the street behind us had their dogs out in their orchard this morning, so I had to listen to a chorus of barking from the time I stepped out of the car till when I returned. Plus, running the gauntlet of spider webs along the trail that leads to the canal.
And I have been spared from working a whole lot during the heat wave. I (we) have to remodel the building that we’re moving the thrift store into and PG&E turned off the power when the previous tenant left, though we had already signed up and asked for it to be left on. Why was I not surprised? In any case, the power won’t be on till late Friday afternoon, too late to do any work in a hot building.
Since it’s the 4th of July, a barbecued dinner is in order. I have a top round steak that I intend to tenderize thoroughly this morning and then marinate it for at least 8 hours. And I cleaned up the barrel cooker yesterday, washing the dust and grime off of the outside. I think a slow cooking time will be best for the steak.
It’s time for another cup of coffee and then I will walk out into the orchard and see how the irrigating is going. I can see about half of the orchard from my window and I can already tell that it’s moving pretty slowly.
While waiting for the water to rise, I was reading that the Republicans are lagging far behind in their money raising for the presidential candidates. The Democrats are picking up the majority of the hard cash these days. Which makes me wonder; since we are, or will be, buying a president once more, shouldn’t we get our money back when he turns out to be a dud? Maybe double our money back?
And another disturbing fact; it seems that the data shows the majority of young people are becoming ‘Liberals’! (Whatever that means)… What happened? Did their role models fail them?
