What was I thinking?

Here comes the heat! It’s close to 70° right now and it’s just 5 AM. I wonder what the pool temperature is at this hour? If I didn’t have irrigation chores at 6 this morning, I would probably go for a swim. Maybe later.

The news is sort of skimpy this morning; with most news sources focused on the holiday. But there was this…

Bush Is Said to Have Held Long Debate on Decision
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and JIM RUTENBERG
President Bush and a small circle of advisers are said to have delved deeply into the evidence in the case, debating I. Lewis Libby Jr.’s guilt or innocence.

I’m sure it was quite a debate. “Heads, I commute his sentence. Tails, I pardon him. Darn! Tails again! OK; how about 1,001 times out of 2,000?”

On another subject; the Glenn County Seniors are about to move their Thrift Store to its new location and as part of that move, they have been getting rid of stuff that doesn’t sell. I loaded up the truck with bags of clothes and other odds and ends. I was planning on taking them to the dump, but the Catholic Church is having a rummage sale soon and they took my load. And included in the load were a dozen or so walkers, canes and crutches; including one brand new walker. But, the Catholics didn’t want them either and so they are destined for the dump.

It turns out that these items are literally a ‘dime a dozen’. Medicare buys them and seniors get them regularly, even when they have existing ones. The doctor prescribes it, the supplier delivers it and the senior puts it in the closet with all of the rest. After awhile it ends up in thrift stores…and the dumps.

I saw a dozen. From a very small portion of the population in one town in a small county, a rural county at that. Now imagine how many you could find in one metropolitan area. A state. And more are prescribed and delivered every day.

They say that we have a problem funding Medicare. They say Medicare will soon be bankrupt. So, what if…let’s suppose those in charge decided to run Medicare properly, with oversight and responsibility. Oh, I know…silly me!
