Dark? Nothing?

...it's not the enigmatic black-hole variety. This is a hole that anyone can understand: In a region one-billion light-years across, there’s simply nothing there:

Now that's a tough one. Trying to grasp infinity is hard enough, but to understand 'nothing'? Even an empty universe would be something. This may take me awhile.
