More pain this morning. Nothing serious; just the kind of pain you get from working hard after a long period of sloth. But our project, the remodeled thrift store is almost complete. We took a load of construction debris and junk to the dump yesterday and we’ll have at least one more load to dispose of before we open for business next Monday. It will be a less than perfect opening as we still have the ‘hard goods’ section left to complete and will only be selling clothing for at least another week.
We’re still looking for a name for the store; one that avoids the S word. As in Senior citizen. What’s in a name? Apparently, everything. There is a certain danger in being tagged with a name. Names can easily be demonized, as liberals found out. Cowardly liberals have run away from the name and call themselves ‘progressives’ now. Neocons are facing that same threat. (But they deserve it) And how about the word ‘teenager’? There’s a word that has been overused as a form of punishment. And although I dislike the ‘senior citizen’ appellation, I can’t think of anything that could replace it. What if we become politically correct and drop any mention of age at all? We could simply become the Glenn County Citizens Thrift Store. There’s nothing in that name to offend. Or is there?
If you know me at all, you know I’m very much against tribalism and consider it the source for all of our problems. ‘Our’ meaning the human race. And of course naming is a large part of that. Tribes have names. Liberal versus Conservative. Catholic versus Protestant. Black versus White. On and on it goes. And yes, I get caught up in it as well. Mea Culpa.
Oops. I have gone too far. I was only looking for a better name for the thrift store and the next thing I knew, I was on a soapbox…
I liked Second Time’s a Charm and Twice Upon a Time that you thought of. Here is one where Justin used to shop "Sacks Thrift Avenue". No Senior in there.

Darn, the good ones are all gone. I recently read an article that said that the "big" thing now is to get your kids name domain as soon as you can so they can have their own personalized website in the future. Domain names are getting scarce so many companies are getting odd domain names that have nothing to do with their company, like "rabbitroll.com" or "tomatograss.com" just two random words thrown together to make a domain name. Will we ever have the .net domain names be as popular as the .coms?
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the radio show, "The Dead Dog Cafe" on Canadian radio. (Heard on KVMR) They had a random name generator and if you called in, you could receive a 'genuine Indian name'. Random name generators for websites? I'm sure that's how they pick names for bands.
