Morning arrives. As it always does about this time. Now I have to adjust my focus and engage my brain. Right after I finish this cup of coffee. I know that I made noises in the past about getting rid of or modifying the morning coffee habit, but that first cup is so satisfying! And the second. Habits; can’t live without them.
And with habits being what they are…I have already read Time Goes By this morning.
Being an elder, I have my own views on the subject. I think that ageism contributes to how elders feel about themselves. Elders too often buy into the myths that accompany aging. If you are told often enough that you’re somewhat diminished as you age, you will believe it after awhile. Maybe not consciously, but it will affect you and how you see life.
In my view, you have to fight back. You have to avoid the herd mentality at all costs. Think about it; in most cases, you have retired and that means that the job that once defined who you were is gone and now you are free. Free to be whatever or whoever you want and to hold your own opinions.
But, sadly, too many elders act as if life were scripted for them and this is the 3rd act and they have a role to play. And they hold onto that role as if it were a lifeboat in a storm. Oops! Too many metaphors.
