Last night, we were in the large crowd of family and friends that had gathered to watch the 75 graduates of Durham junior high receive their awards and their promotion to high school. It was especially rewarding for us as we watched Meghan receive her scholastic rewards for her 3.96 GPA. Someone we didn’t know, remarked, “I didn’t know she was smart too?” Yes. She is. And her equally bright cousins were there as well. We had four of our grandchildren in attendance last night. What fun!
Durham is somewhat unique among California schools as all grade levels, kindergarten through high school, share the same campus. So when Meghan goes off to high school in the fall, it will be to the same familiar corner of Durham, just different class rooms.
Evenings like this always generate memories and so I remembered my own junior high experiences. I can do without high school memories completely; junior high was my all time favorite school experience! That’s where I first learned that the English class could teach you more than how to spell correctly. I learned to write and I discovered art. I became one of the AV geeks and I played John Wilkes Booth; assassinating ‘Lincoln’ and jumping off of the auditorium stage before limping through the audience. Are there any ‘do-overs’? I want to do junior high over again!
(Too bad I didn't include her shoes in this photo...black high top tennies!)
What a great looking bunch of smart people!! Congratulations to Meghan!
