Cool, Clear, Water II

We just heard that California is officially in a drought mode and those of us in the north state will soon be able to sell our water to the south. Right! The check is the mail. And since we’re running short here in the north, why would we want to even think of selling it? Greed.

I didn’t need an ‘official’ to tell me we were in dire straits in regard to water this year; I only have to look north and east to see Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen, both are bald! Shasta has always had a full cover of snow at the summit. Not now.

As long as we continue to think of water as product that we can own, we’re going to have wars over it as its availability decreases. I have been reading of the coming water wars and I’m thinking that they aren’t far off now. And I also think there will be a lot of ‘collateral damage’ in this war. For instance; we have a well and a pump for our water supply. And that water doesn’t sit in a one acre square pool below our property. It’s all part of an aquifer that extends across city, county and sometimes state lines. It’s our water. All of us. Except for the times when it’s in short supply and can be sold to the highest bidder. Then it belongs to the ones with the biggest pumps and the deepest wells. All sucking water out of what used to be a ‘common pool’.
