I love to read my icons. Whitney used to be creeped out by them but once she learned about the story each icon has to tell she began to appreciate what these icon can do, tell a story using image, not merely art but a story, scripture for the those that can't read in some cases. I have the icon of Christ the Good Shepherd which is one of my favorite images. I had that icon at the side of my dying stepfather as I read from the Gospel of John. What comfort seeing the words of scripture.
I also have an Icon of St. Patrick and St. John Chrysosotom. I love to share with my daughter how God can take men, women, and even his little ones and make them great. One of my favotite icons is the icon of the Boxer Rebellion, it shows the young martyrs. I also have the icon of the annunciation, I love that image of our mother learning she is going to become a mother to God in the Flesh. I am looking to get the icon of the Holy Trinity, an icon of St. Athanasius (a personal hero of mine) and probably the most moving icon I have ever seen, the Icon of St. Ignatius in the Roman arena with the lions. I have that icon of my Playstation Portable.
Icons seem to be such an aid to me, sometimes I need the images to reinforce the idea. I have also found Icons and aid in my devotional life. My icon corner is set apart from the rest of my home. It almost forces attention to my bible and my devotions. It is like having my own little church for Renee and me.
One thing I love is his desire to insure his sin doesn't infect the image. I'm sure we'd all agree Gd could even overcome that, it's the attitude of wanting to give his best that I so love.

I love them for other reasons...as great works of art and as a testament to the faith of the artist.
ReplyDeleteAnd the word "icon" is such a neat word; found in all sorts of places!
